How Do International Climate Talks Impact the Philadelphia Region?

Delegates from almost 200 countries are meeting in Dubai this week for the 28th Conference of the Parties, or COP 28, which will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change, the AP reports.

According to the New York Times, the goal of the two-week meeting is to hammer out an agreement on how to keep global temperatures from rising 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over pre-industrial levels, or 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) if they want to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

A recent report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says carbon emissions need to be cut by 8% each year up until 2034 to have even a 50% chance of staying below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In the Philadelphia area, the effects of climate change are already being felt, including wildfires, flooding, and a heatwave that closed schools in September.

The city of Philadelphia is not sending anyone to COP, but it is a member of several organizations that do attend and advocate for the needs of cities, including Bloomberg's C40 group, WHYY reports.
