Reinventing The Nonprofit Internship Experience

There's a lot of talk these days about the need for more internships for young people, and Business Insider takes a look at one organization that hopes to change that: the Driving Force Institute.

It's a nonprofit that Ric Ric, former editor of the University of Virginia's Daily Cavalier and current CEO of the nonprofit, founded in 2013 that aims to give low-income students a leg up in the job market by providing them with internships in nonprofit sectors such as advertising, fundraising, and marketing.

The idea is to give them a leg up in a post-bubble world where, as Ric puts it, "the number of meaningful experiences experiences for low-income Americans are largely denied."

The problem, he writes in a blog post, is that many of those internships are for companies that don't have much in the way of budget or staff to offer, and that makes it hard for them to connect with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

"I want risk takers who aren't afraid to fail," he writes.

"That is doubly true when it comes to internships in an era where those who make the most relevant experience are still available."
