When Sonoma County, Calif., closed the Sonoma Developmental Center last year, it left behind a site that's been the subject of much debate: what to do with it? Now, county officials have come up with what they call a "groundbreaking business plan" for the site, the Press Democrat reports.
The Center for Climate Action and Innovation, as the plan is called, would focus on climate change and its effects on the environment, while preserving the site's cultural heritage.
"This approach respects the site's past while tackling future climate challenges," says County Supervisor Susan Gorin, who's on the board that came up with the plan.
The group behind the plan, the Center for Climate Action and Innovation, is a not-for-profit that's working with the county on the project.
The group's executive director, Michael Brune, tells the Press Democrat that the plan is a "game-changer" because it's different from typical redevelopment plans in that it "blends the site's cultural heritage with forward-thinking climate initiatives and setting a new standard for sustainable projects."
