"Akisni in Lakota language means wellness, recovery, and healing," Curtiss Heidebrink says.
"We chose this word as the foundation of our program though we will serve all of our North Dakota Indigenous Nations."
The Lakota word means "wellness," "recovery," and "healing," and Heidebrink is the director of the Akisni Warrior Lodge program at James River Correctional Center in Jamestown, North Dakota, which has been awarded a $30,000 grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield North Dakota Caring Foundation to implement a trauma-informed healing curriculum to reduce recidivism among North Dakota's Indigenous population, the Grand Forks Herald reports.
"This curriculum has effectively reduced recidivism from 66%-28% among Alaska Natives so we are highly anticipating similar results here," says Rachel Bye, a rep for the F5 Project, which will use the funds to implement the curriculum at the AWL.
The AWL, which opened in 2023, is designed to provide culturally rooted programs for inmates at the James River Correctional Center.
The F5 Project provides care coordination and peer support for individuals needing reentry, recovery, and mental health resources.
