"There's one simple statement that we see a lotthat is 'be kind,'" said Kara Seesholtz, CEO of the Community Giving Foundation, after students from 15 school districts in central Pennsylvania handed out $75,000 in grants Thursday.
Students in the foundation's Youth in Philanthropy program conducted needs assessments in their communities and found that mental health, healthy food, the cost of healthy food, and transportation were among the top needs, the Centre Daily Times reports.
The grants were awarded after the students conducted their needs assessments.
"This need was originally identified after a tragedy that occurred involving one of our intermediate school children, but just last week we faced a different tragedy involving a student from our high school," said a student from Mifflinburg Area High School.
The 10-year-old died in a house fire, and "we are hoping for support revolving around this loss as well," said a student.
