Using Immersive Media to Strengthen Support for the Environment: An Interview with Wendy Schmidt

"We are just entering this new chapter of media, representing a sense of wonder and possibility for storytelling, and equity, which, to me, represents a sense of responsibility and stewardship," Wendy Schmidt tells Grist.

That's why the co-founder of the Schmidt Ocean Institute is among this year's crop of recipients of the MacArthur Foundation's vaunted "genius" grants.

The 39-year-old's work "transcends traditional charity, rooted in'systems thinking,' a holistic method that considers the interconnections within ecological, social, and economic systems," writes Rhett Ayers Butler at Mongabay.

Among the projects Schmidt is behind: the 11th Hour Project, which uses cutting-edge technology to collect data on ocean health, and the Agog: The Media Institute, which uses virtual reality to address environmental issues.
